Building Better Futures

NEUPC have been working closely with the North East Universities of Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside (The NE5), to develop a range of agreements and initiatives, with the aim of delivering greater benefit to the North East economy and the community as a whole.
Those within construction are aware that the evolvement of their industry relies on our future generation, making it so prevalent to inform students of the vast array of interesting and rewarding opportunities within construction and how it is an industry for life. Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, together with our appointed contractors and consultants, we have continued to explore and develop initiatives for the north east community.  “Building Better Futures” is the latest offering from the group.
Led by Jonathan Hunter, Partner at GSS Architecture and Hollie Statham, Design Manager at Bowmer and Kirkland, Building Better Futures has been created to raise aspirations and awareness, and to breakdown the stereotypes within the construction industry.  There are a vast range of professions and careers available in this industry and we want to help young women realise the opportunities, show them the routes into those careers, and hopefully make it clear that this isn’t just an industry for the boys.

The initiative features a series of videos including animated and real-life content, focusing on some of the professions that are involved in construction projects such as the Newcastle Helix. Not all the women featured have worked on this specific development, but their videos highlight their successful careers in the construction industry, and how they work to make projects like the Helix a reality.
Over nine weeks we've brought you interviews from the following women;
